of R. T. W. Duke, Sr., as Commanding Officer of the 2nd Battalion, Va. Reserves

 

“In May 1864 the Reserves for Albemarle County boys between 16-18 and old men between 45-60 were called up. They met in Charlottesville and being more than enough to form one company were organized into two companies. They elected W. T. Early captain of Company A and Dr. Dennis Captain of Company B. Being in Charlottesville at the time and having been in the regular [command] since but as Captain & then as colonel (and having resigned in March 1864) the men of these two companies requested me to take charge of them and command them to Richmond…”
